AES acquires Community Energy Solar

Community Energy developed the 100 MW Amazon Solar Farm in Virginia.

The AES Corporation said it is acquiring Community Energy Solar, LLC in a move expected to further bolster its renewable energy expansion efforts. Terms were not disclosed.

With offices in Radnor, Penn., and Boulder, Colo., the Community Energy team has developed more than 3 GW of solar and storage projects.

AES’ U.S. renewables portfolio now includes 4.4 GW of operating assets and 5.7 GW of signed power purchase agreements (PPAs).

In July, Community Energy marked the milestone of 2 GW of solar projects developed and financed since entering the solar development business in 2010. It completed its first gigawatt of development in about 10 years, then added a second gigawatt in less than two years.

The company developed the 100 MW Amazon Solar Farm Virginia – Southampton in Virginia which supplies Amazon Web Services data centers under a long-term PPA. The project was built by, and is owned and operated by Dominion Energy, Inc., a unit of Dominion.

In November, AES boosted its full-year 2021 target to sign renewables under long-term PPAs to 5 GW, from 4 GW.
